WordPress103 reviews Hafenstudios Ads: 4.5 stars and what we made of it

The YouTube channel WordPress103 put our ad plugin to the test and gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars. He liked the split tests best. We took his three points of criticism as a reason to build a new version straight away.

Feedback on a plugin rarely comes as concrete as it does in a video where someone tries it out on camera. That is exactly what happened: the YouTube channel WordPress103 took a look at Hafenstudios Ads, our ad manager for WordPress, and gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars. The verdict was kind and useful at the same time, because it put a finger on three open points.

The verdict: 4.5 stars, split tests as the highlight

What he liked best was the split test feature. That pleases us in particular, because it is the core of what sets Hafenstudios Ads apart from simply pasting in ad code: two variants run against each other, and you see impressions, clicks and click rate per variant instead of guessing which banner pulls better. The free version already covers this, since 2.4.0 with formats other than raw HTML as well, one test at a time. The Pro version lifts that limit.

His criticism, and what we made of it

We did not file the video away as praise, we treated it as a list of requirements. Version 2.4.0 has been in the WordPress directory since 23 August, and here are his three points next to what came of them.

1. There was no image picker

He was right, there was none. Image fields in the template wizard now open the WordPress media library, show a preview with a remove link and take the alt text from the library as long as the alt field is still empty. Pasting an external image URL still works.

2. The date picker was awkward

Two things were wrong. The countdown target date was a text field with a hint about the format, and it is now a native date and time field. And scheduling, meaning the start and end of an ad, only existed in the full editor, so a template ad could not be scheduled without leaving the template behind. That now sits in the wizard under „Advanced“, with the time zone of the site and an end date that cannot fall before the start.

3. The route to custom HTML was hidden

The route existed, but as a small link right at the bottom that threw away the template and its fields for good. Now it is a visible card that opens a paused copy in the HTML editor while the template ad stays untouched, and the wizard says so beforehand. More important still: „Advanced“ now holds alignment, maximum width, margin and a field for custom CSS whose selectors are limited to that one block. The case of „I only want rounder corners“ no longer needs any HTML.

What else is in 2.4.0

Because the template library itself was still thin, 2.4.0 brings six free templates with it: testimonial, native in-feed card, book or course card, seasonal deal with a coupon code to copy and a countdown, event announcement and a sponsor logo wall. On top of that come plenty of things you only miss once you work with a plugin every day:

  • ads.txt management straight from the plugin.
  • Space reserved against layout shifts, so the content does not jump while the ad loads.
  • A fallback for unfilled AdSense slots instead of a gap.
  • Non-personalised ads when consent is declined, off by default.
  • Targeting by page type and user role and three positions inside the post content.
  • A sticky option and a diagnosis view: open a page while logged in with ?adjet_debug=1, and every block that does not show up tells you why.
  • CSV export and an importer.
Why we are telling you this: Good feedback deserves an answer in code, not in thanks alone. A review that names three concrete weaknesses is worth more than five stars without a reason. Thanks to WordPress103 for the first look.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use split tests in the free version?

Yes. The free version of Hafenstudios Ads reads a rotation group as an A/B test and shows impressions, clicks and click rate per variant, from 100 impressions per variant onwards. Since version 2.4.0 that also works with formats other than raw HTML, one test at a time. The Pro version lifts that limit.

What is new in version 2.4.0?

An image picker via the media library, a native date field with scheduling in the wizard, a visible route to custom HTML and CSS per block, six new free templates plus ads.txt management, space reservation against layout shifts, an AdSense fallback, non-personalised ads when consent is declined, targeting by page type and role, a diagnosis view, CSV export and an importer.

Does analytics data leave my website?

No. Hafenstudios Ads counts impressions and clicks in your own WordPress database. No analytics data is sent to an external server.
